If your child is older than a toddler it is likely how they eat is already a habit. Now is the time to get their healthy eating habits established. This is easier to say than it is to do.

In order to keep your picky eater healthy, it will be necessary to bring the five food groups into their diet, a little at a time. Increasing the options available to your picky eater increases the likelihood they will find something they like. Start with these steps to turn your picky eater into a healthy eater.

Step #1: Eliminate treats that are not healthy. Instead of a chocolate bar, try a banana. If a child is hungry, they tend to eat a wider variety of options. Sugar is an addiction, and it is one that will need to be removed slowly. Cut out as much of the artificial sugar foods as possible.

When you are making a meal, have several healthy options available. Do not let the child bring their ideas of what to eat to the meal. If they don’t like the salad, they make like the mixed veggies. Try not to offer the foods you are trying to replace at this time because that is what the child is used to and that is what they will choose.
